Complete HVAC system replacement in Birmingham, AL

When the condenser, the furnace or air handler and the coil are all close to the end, swapping them one at a time costs more over the years. We replace the whole system as a matched set, sized to your house.

Installers setting a new outdoor unit beside a two-story home
Quick answer

A complete replacement swaps the outdoor unit, the indoor furnace or air handler, the evaporator coil and usually the thermostat in one job. Zeltman Heating & Air starts with a Manual J load calculation, checks the ductwork, installs equipment built for the new A2L refrigerants and hauls the old system away. You see the price before anything is ordered.

Overview

Why the indoor and outdoor halves get replaced together

A split system is two machines that only perform well as a pair. The outdoor unit holds the compressor, and the indoor coil on your furnace or air handler is where heat actually leaves the air. Manufacturers test those two parts together, and the published SEER2 number only holds when they match.

That matters more now than it did a few years ago. New residential systems use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, and R-410A equipment is no longer installed new. An older coil can't simply stay in place under a new outdoor unit built for a different refrigerant. R-22 systems are even further apart, since that refrigerant stopped being made in 2020.

Sizing comes before brand or model. We run a Manual J load calculation using your square footage, windows, insulation and which way the house faces. Plenty of Birmingham homes carry a system a half ton or a full ton too big, which is why they feel clammy in July. Our guide on why a bigger AC is not better explains the reasons.

Ductwork gets a hard look too. If the ducts are sound and sized well, we keep them and seal the connections at the new equipment. If returns are undersized or joints have pulled apart in the attic, we tell you, because new equipment on bad ducts gives back much of what you paid for. Permits and inspections are handled as your local jurisdiction requires.

What we check

What we measure and confirm on a system replacement

  • Manual J load calculation for the whole house
  • Static pressure and return air size on the existing ducts
  • Duct joints, flex runs and insulation in the attic or crawlspace
  • Electrical supply, breaker size and the outdoor disconnect
  • Gas line, flue size and venting for a new furnace
  • Condensate drain route, trap, pan and float switch
  • Refrigerant charge weighed in and verified with superheat and subcooling
  • Airflow, temperature split and thermostat setup at startup
Cost

What a full HVAC system replacement costs in Birmingham

Typical installed range

$8,640 to $17,980

Most matched split systems for a Birmingham home land in this range, installed. A basic AC and gas furnace pair for a single-story ranch sits near the low end. Variable-speed heat pumps, two-stage furnaces and homes that need duct changes sit higher. The written price covers equipment, labor, removal and startup.

What moves the number

System type
A heat pump with an air handler, an AC with a gas furnace and a dual fuel setup all price differently, and the right pick depends on how you heat.
Efficiency level
A single-stage system costs less up front than a variable-speed unit, which runs longer at low speed and pulls more humidity out of the house.
Size of the house
Tonnage follows the load calculation. A two-story home with two systems is really two projects priced together.
Ductwork condition
Sound ducts carry over. Undersized returns, crushed flex or a duct system that needs replacing adds to the total.
Equipment location
A furnace in a hall closet is quicker to swap than an air handler wedged into a hot attic or a shallow crawlspace.
How a visit goes

How a complete replacement project runs from first visit to startup

  1. Home visit and load calculation

We measure the house, look over the ducts, electrical service and venting, and ask how each room feels through the year.

  2. Options with written prices

You get a short list of matched systems at different efficiency levels, each with the full installed price and what drives the difference.

  3. Permits and an install date

We pull permits where your city or county requires them and book the install, usually one full day for a typical single-system home.

  4. Removal and installation

Refrigerant is recovered and the old equipment comes out. The new outdoor unit, coil, furnace or air handler and thermostat go in, and the old system leaves with us for disposal.

  5. Startup and walkthrough

We charge the system, test airflow and safety controls, show you the filter and thermostat, and help you register the manufacturer parts warranty.

When it makes sense

When a full replacement makes more sense than another repair

Both halves are 12 to 15 years old

When the outdoor unit and the furnace or air handler share the same age, the next failure is rarely the last one. Replacing them together avoids a second install a year later.

The system still runs on R-22

Every recharge on an R-22 system costs more than the last. A leak on one of these units is usually where repair money stops making sense.

A compressor or coil has failed

A dead compressor or a leaking coil on an older system can cost a large share of a new one. We put both numbers side by side.

Comfort was never right

Clammy rooms, an upstairs that runs hot and constant short cycling often trace back to the wrong size from the first install.

Power bills keep creeping up

Older units lose efficiency as coils corrode and motors wear. A matched SEER2 system uses less power through a long Alabama summer.

You plan to stay for years

If the house is a long-term home, a planned spring or fall replacement beats an emergency swap in the middle of a heat wave.

Around Birmingham

System replacement across Birmingham and the suburbs

Shelby County subdivisions in Pelham, Helena and Chelsea are full of builder-grade systems now reaching the 12 to 18 year mark, often two per house. In those homes we look at both systems together, since the upstairs unit usually works harder and fails first. In Moody, many subdivision heat pumps are coming up on their first replacement.

Older brick ranches in Center Point, Huffman and Crestwood raise different questions: original crawlspace ducts, small returns and closet furnaces with old flue pipe. Our base on 15th Avenue North keeps those east side neighborhoods close. In many of them, ductwork replacement goes in alongside the new system.
