AC replacement in Birmingham, AL

Your outdoor unit is 15 years old, runs on R-22 or just needed its third major repair. We swap it for a matched condenser and coil, keep the ductwork that still works and tell you plainly what replacement will and won't fix.

Old AC condenser being removed for replacement
Quick answer

AC replacement swaps an aging outdoor unit and its indoor coil for a matched pair that uses today's A2L refrigerant and meets SEER2 minimums. Zeltman Heating & Air checks your existing ducts, line set and furnace or air handler first, so the new system isn't held back by old parts. You get a written price before any work starts.

Overview

Replacing an old air conditioner without repeating its mistakes

Most central air systems around Birmingham last 12 to 18 years, and the long, humid cooling season wears them down faster than milder climates do. Replacement makes sense when repairs start to stack up, the refrigerant is no longer made or the system simply can't hold the house at a comfortable humidity.

R-22 is the clearest case. Production ended in 2020, so every pound left is expensive, and a leaking R-22 system can cost more to recharge each summer than it's worth. R-410A systems can still be serviced, but they aren't installed new anymore. Replacement split systems use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B.

A replacement should be a matched condenser and indoor coil, not a new outdoor unit bolted to a 15-year-old coil. The coil has to suit the new refrigerant and the outdoor unit's capacity, or efficiency and humidity removal both suffer. We also confirm the furnace or air handler blower can deliver the airflow the new system needs.

Replacement is also the moment to question the old size. Plenty of builder systems were oversized, and the same tonnage isn't automatically right. We run a load calculation, measure static pressure on your existing ducts and keep what works. Most homes keep their ductwork, with sealing or a larger return where the numbers call for it.

What we check

What we check before pricing an AC replacement

  • Existing tonnage compared with a fresh load calculation
  • Static pressure across the duct system and filter
  • Line set size, insulation and condition, and whether it can be reused
  • Return air size and the number of returns in the house
  • Indoor coil fit, so the new coil matches the outdoor unit and cabinet
  • Furnace or air handler blower capacity, age and motor type
  • Outdoor pad, electrical disconnect, whip and breaker size
  • Drain pan, condensate line and float switch at the indoor unit
Cost

What AC replacement costs in Birmingham

Typical condenser and coil replacement

$5,280 to $10,940

This range covers a matched outdoor unit and indoor coil for a typical home, installed and started up. Two-stage and variable-speed systems sit at the top. Replacing the furnace or air handler too is a complete system replacement and is priced separately. Every option comes with a written price before anything is removed.

What moves the number

Tonnage and efficiency
A small single-stage system and a large variable-speed system sit at opposite ends of the range.
Coil location
A coil in a hall closet is quicker to swap than one on a horizontal unit in a tight attic or a crawlspace.
Line set reuse
A clean, correctly sized line set can stay. Undersized, kinked or buried lines get replaced, which adds material and labor.
Blower compatibility
An older furnace or air handler with a weak motor may limit what the new system can do, and sometimes changes the recommendation.
Electrical and pad updates
A new disconnect, whip or breaker, or a fresh pad on sloped red clay, adds a modest amount.
How a visit goes

What happens on AC replacement day

  1. Assessment and options

We look at the existing system, run the numbers and lay out options at different efficiency levels, each with a written price.

  2. Recovering the old refrigerant

Before anything is disconnected, the old refrigerant is recovered into a tank as EPA rules require, never vented to the air.

  3. Removing and setting equipment

The old condenser and coil come out. The new matched pair goes in on a level pad, with the coil sealed to the furnace or air handler.

  4. Lines, drain and wiring

We braze the line set with nitrogen flowing, reconnect or replace the drain and update the wiring and disconnect as needed.

  5. Commissioning

A deep vacuum, a weighed-in charge, superheat or subcooling checks, an airflow test and thermostat setup, then help registering the manufacturer parts warranty.

When it makes sense

When AC replacement beats another repair

An R-22 system with a leak

Recharging R-22 year after year costs more than it saves. When the leak is in the coil or near the compressor, replacement is usually the smarter money.

A failed compressor on an older unit

A compressor swap on a system past 12 years often costs a large share of a new system, without fixing the aging coil or fan motor.

Repairs piling up

A capacitor one summer, a fan motor the next and a contactor after that is a sign the whole unit is wearing out together.

Humidity you can feel

If the house holds 78 but feels sticky, a worn or oversized system may no longer remove moisture well. The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity under 60%.

Rising summer power bills

When Alabama Power bills creep up each summer with no change in habits, the old system is likely running longer to do the same work.

Corroded coil or rusted cabinet

Heavy corrosion on the outdoor coil fins or a rusted-through base pan means more leaks and failures are on the way.

Around Birmingham

Where AC replacement comes up most around Birmingham

Shelby County subdivisions in Pelham, Helena and Chelsea were built out mostly from the 1990s on, and many of those builder-grade systems are now in the 12 to 18 year range. Two-story homes there often have two systems of the same age. We'll tell you whether replacing both together makes sense or whether one has years left.

Closer to our base, brick ranches in Center Point, Roebuck and Huffman are often on their second or third outdoor unit while still running original ducts. A new condenser alone won't fix leaky attic or crawlspace runs, so we test them first. Carrier, Trane and Goodman replacements are common here, and we install most major brands.
