Air purifier and UV light installation in Birmingham, AL

Whole-house air cleaners can help with dust, pollen and a slimy coil, but they are not magic. We install the type that fits your system and tell you plainly what it will and will not do.

Quick answer

In-duct air cleaners work every time the blower runs. UV lights aimed at the coil keep it and the drain pan from growing slime. Electronic and polarized media cleaners capture fine particles a basic filter misses. Zeltman Heating & Air explains the trade-offs, steers clear of ozone generators and installs the option that matches your ductwork and your goals.

Overview

What in-duct air cleaners can do, and what they cannot

The phrase air purification covers several very different products, so it helps to sort them by job. UV lights kill or deactivate microbes on surfaces they shine on continuously. Electronic air cleaners charge particles and collect them on metal plates. Polarized media cleaners use a low-voltage field to make particles stick to a fiber pad. Each one solves a different problem.

UV lights do their best work on the evaporator coil and drain pan. Those surfaces stay wet all summer in Birmingham, and biofilm builds there, restricting airflow and clogging the drain. A coil-facing lamp shines on them around the clock and keeps that growth down. Air rushing past a lamp at full blower speed gets only a brief exposure, so we do not oversell UV as a way to clean the air itself.

For dust, pollen and pet dander, a media or electronic cleaner is the better tool. Electronic cells need regular washing, and some designs give off small amounts of ozone, which the EPA warns can irritate the lungs. We avoid products built to make ozone and choose cells and bulbs designed to produce little or none.

No air cleaner replaces fixing the source. If a damp crawlspace or a leaky return is pulling in dirty air, the cleaner just has more work to do. We look at filtration, humidity and duct leaks alongside any purifier, and we make no health claims. What you can expect is a cleaner coil, fewer circulating particles and honest advice about the cost.

A media cabinet holds far more filter surface than a thin filter, so it catches fine particles without choking airflow.
What we check

What we look at before recommending an air cleaner

  • Coil and drain pan condition, including any biofilm or musty odor
  • Static pressure with the current filter, so a new cleaner does not strain the blower
  • Space near the air handler for a media cabinet or electronic cell
  • Supply or return plenum location for a UV lamp facing the coil
  • Power available at the air handler for UV and electronic units
  • Return leaks that pull in crawlspace or attic air
  • Indoor humidity levels, since damp air feeds growth a cleaner cannot fix
  • Your goals: coil cleanliness, dust, pollen, pets or general particle reduction
Cost

What air purifiers and UV lights cost in Birmingham

Typical installed range

$385 to $2,465

A single coil-facing UV lamp sits near the low end. Media cabinets, polarized media cleaners and electronic air cleaners cost more, especially when the return needs changes to fit them. Ongoing costs include replacement bulbs, pads or cell cleaning, and we tell you those up front.

What moves the number

Type of cleaner
A UV lamp is the simplest install. Electronic and polarized media cleaners take more parts and labor.
Return modifications
Fitting a cabinet sometimes means reworking the return plenum or moving the filter location.
Electrical needs
UV and electronic units need power, and some installs need a new switched connection at the air handler.
Systems to cover
Two-story homes with two air handlers need a unit on each one to cover the whole house.
Ongoing parts
Bulbs typically need replacing about once a year, and media pads on a regular schedule.
How a visit goes

How an air cleaner or UV light installation works

  1. Talk about the goal

Dust, pollen, a slimy coil or a musty smell each lead to different equipment. We match the product to the problem you actually have.

  2. Check the system

We measure static pressure and look at the coil, the plenum and the space around the air handler before choosing a unit.

  3. Install the equipment

UV lamps mount through the plenum facing the coil. Media and electronic cabinets go in the return near the air handler.

  4. Wire and seal

Units that need power are wired at the air handler, with a door safety switch on UV lamps. Cabinet joints are sealed against leaks.

  5. Show you the upkeep

We show you how to change pads, wash cells or replace UV bulbs, and note the schedule so maintenance does not slip.

When it makes sense

When an in-duct air cleaner is worth adding

A coil that keeps getting slimy

If your coil or drain pan grows biofilm every summer, a coil-facing UV lamp helps keep those surfaces clean between visits.

Drain lines that clog with algae

Slime that starts on the coil and pan ends up in the condensate line. A cleaner coil usually means fewer drain backups.

Heavy dust on furniture

If dust settles fast after cleaning, a media or electronic cleaner catches more of the fine particles moving through the house.

Spring pollen gets indoors

When March and April coat everything yellow-green, a higher-efficiency cleaner traps more of the pollen that sneaks inside.

Pets in the house

Dander and fine hair circulate through the ducts. A media cabinet catches more of it than a thin filter can.

You want one system, not portable units

An in-duct cleaner serves every room the ducts reach, with no portable purifiers to empty and carry around.

Around Birmingham

Air cleaners in Birmingham-area homes

Attic air handlers in the 1950s to 1970s ranches around Crestwood, Roebuck and Center Point sit in hot, humid spaces where coils and drain pans grow slime quickly. A UV lamp at the coil is one of the more useful add-ons in those homes, especially when the condensate line has clogged more than once. Two-story homes in Hoover and Trussville with two systems need a cleaner on each air handler for whole-house coverage.

Pollen season is the other local driver. Pine and oak pollen coat Birmingham in March and April, and a media cabinet catches more of it than a thin filter. We fit air cleaners to Carrier, Trane, Lennox and most other air handlers found around the metro. We install from our base on 15th Avenue North out through Shelby and St. Clair counties.
